Purpose:
This scholarship prize will be awarded to an advanced architecture student who has shown particular prowess in relating modern design to historic context. The scholarship seeks to encourage architecture programs throughout the United States to focus on this area of practice. The scholarship honors Gerry Tritschler, AIA, a former Principal at Shalom Baranes Associates, who spent his career focused on rehabilitating historic buildings.

Prize:
$25,000 and an internship at the firm to be awarded every three years beginning in 2017.

Eligibility:
The scholarship is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate architecture students. If undergraduate, the scholarship would apply to the fifth year of an accredited professional program. If graduate, the scholarship would apply to second or third year of graduate study.

Submission Requirements:
The Washington Architectural Foundation will host the competition and the scholarship program for the firm. Entries to the Competition must focus on urban sites and must either incorporate some historic element (a full building or portion of a building) as part of a new project and/or propose a new project within a context having a recognizable historic character. This is not intended to be limited to pure restoration.

Applicants must submit their proposals by the competition deadline in .pdf format no larger than 6MB, with sufficient detail and justification for the jury to render an opinion on its merits. The submission must show respect for the surrounding built fabric while presenting a fresh vision of how historic preservation and modern architecture both contribute to the character and vitality of a city. Applicants must fully credit any and all persons who have contributed to the final project.

Awards Jury:
The jury, to be led by Shalom Baranes, FAIA, will include Deborah Berke, FAIA and will have the sole discretion to determine whether an award should be made in a given year. A third juror to be announced.

Competition Schedule:
Submission deadline for 2017 prize: January 16, 2017

Jury deliberations: March 1, 2017

Notification to winner: March 17, 2017
