About the Festival
AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design present the 14th Annual Architecture and the City festival, featuring community workshops, design challenges, educational lectures, tours, films, special events and an exhibition. Taking place in San Francisco every September, the month-long celebration provides opportunities for participants to engage with the local architecture community and experience design in a myriad of ways throughout the city.

Requirements to Submit
We invite you to submit programs that address some of our most pressing urban issues, demonstrate innovation in working toward a more sustainable future, and explore how progressive design and creative problem solving improve our quality of life in the Bay Area. Ideas that investigate the ways architects or projects thoughtfully impact community and reflect issues of sustainability will be given first preference.

2017 THEME: Secret City
This year, the Architecture and the City festival theme will be “Secret City.” We will explore and reveal the many layers of historic San Francisco and how architecture and design play a key role in the ever-changing urban landscape. San Francisco is filled with many people on a daily basis—locals, residents, tourists, commuters, and homeless—each having their own perspective on San Francisco’s current state. Each group of people intimately understand certain parts of the city, while other parts of the city remain hidden or tucked away from the casual observer—the secret city. Programs will create opportunities to help impart and understand the city’s past and how we can seamlessly connect the present urban community to empower a more deliberate, livable future.

Be a part of the conversation as designers explore questions like:
  1. How can we expose the hidden infrastructure that makes our city work and continue to keep up with the growing density of the city?
  2. How do we creatively reclaim abandoned or unused parcels in the city for the better of the surrounding communities?
  3. How do we respond to the underlying consequences of construction and temporary structures that ultimately disrupt and effect an existing neighborhood?
  4. How can we map the city better for pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists, and public transportation?
  5. How can we understand how to better solve the housing challenges for the homeless population?
Join us as we thoughtfully and proactively engage in the theme “Secret City.”
