Welcome to The Post Disaster Housing Competition - Designing Recovery
Introduction

The American Institute of Architects, Architecture for Humanity, Make It Right Foundation, and the St. Bernard Project are proud to announce Designing Recovery, a residential design competition that will have real-world impact on the lives of families who have been struck by disaster. The goal of this competition is to solicit housing designs that are high quality, affordable, and buildable.

This competition is not only about replacing what was lost, but building back better. Three communities – New Orleans, LA; Joplin, MO; and Queens within New York – have been selected as the settings for this competition based on commitments from the competition organizers to construct permanent, affordable housing for the victims of disasters that have taken place. Top prizes will be awarded to a total of three designs – one for each location – but the winning designs according to our jury will not be the right design for everyone. Our mission is to utilize as many competition entries as possible to construct affordable housing in each of these areas.

Any entry that is feasible to build through the development models of Architecture for Humanity, Make it Right, and St. Bernard Project will be placed in a portfolio of design options that we will take to the community. This will enable the competition sponsors to contribute to recovery of architecturally diverse, resilient, and sustainable neighborhoods. Projects that are chosen for construction will be placed on the Open Architecture Network to share this exemplary design work in an open-source format.

Eligibility

To be eligible to win this design competition, any individual or team of individuals must adhere to the following rules:
  • The entry must include a signed affirmation that an architect, licensed within the United States, participated in the design process.
  • The entry must include a signed affirmation that the team did not include the participation of unpaid intern architects in the design process
  • The entry must be submitted without identifying marks, including logos, text, insignia, or images on the display surface that could be used to identify the submission’s authors
  • All text and annotations must be in English and measurements must be in both Metric and United States customary units
If a design entry is disqualified from prize eligibility for any reason, the AIA and its partners shall retain the right to include any submitted design materials in the housing portfolio and to use the design materials as the basis for housing construction. All such materials will be attributed accordingly.

Deadline

The deadline for submission completion is August 15, 2013 before 5:00 PM (Eastern). All deadlines are strictly observed.

Entry Fee

The cost for this competition is $250 per design entry. Teams may submit as many entries as they wish.
